Quarterly Review of the CSM

Image of Quarterly Review of the CSM

You can find the original document - here
Hello, and welcome to the second Quarterly Review of the CSM. This document was made to help people get to grips with how the CSM has been functioning, what we've been doing, and topics we?re focusing on going forwards, as well as helping give everyone a peek on at what some of the quieter members of the CSM have been up to, and what we?re planning to bring to the next summit.
If you cannot find a section on a particular CSM you are interested in here, they have either been unable to, or declined to participate in this review.
Thank you for taking an interest in the CSM and I hope you enjoy reading. As always, feedback will be taken on board for future work like this, so comment on wherever you were directed here from or mail/tweet to Jin'taan.

  • How do you feel the first summit went & do you feel the dialogue with CCP was productive?

The first summit was amazing. Everybody (all devs/csm's) were able to work together productively and because of that everything went really smooth. We were also able to have good discussions and if members disagreed then we got both sides to tell their vision and then just continue. This allowed us to be very effective and efficient with our time.

  • Were there any topics that weren't extensively covered in the first summit that you hope to talk about in the next summit?

I would love to talk about FW, the CSM in general and basically everything thing that comes from the Ascension expansion

  • Has the summit changed your view on any of your fellow CSM member(s)?

Yes, everybody is soo nice but not afraid to enter a discussion.

  • What change within the first half of the term would you consider the most impactful to you?

For me it would be all about how the CSM has been functioning in general. As some might know, CSM 10 wasn't pretty so its good to see that we as CSM 11 were able to ??make the CSM great again??

  • Have you had any ?pet projects? or specific areas that you've tried to push within CCP?

General use of the CSM, Capital gun rebalancing (cpu) are two that come to mind immediately

  • How do you feel the first summit went & do you feel the dialogue with CCP was productive?

I think the first summit went very well and it was nice to see that everything and everyone worked together smoothly.

  • Were there any topics that weren't extensively covered in the first summit that you hope to talk about in the next summit?

Press F to pay respects to Faction Warfare

  • Has the summit changed your view on any of your fellow CSM member(s)?

Certainly. There were some CSM members that I never spoken to much before or anything and then it turns out they are quite nice in real life.

  • What change within the first half of the term would you consider the most impactful to you?

Alpha clones and link changes both helped change the game greatly and made fw lowsec less cancer to roam through

  • Have you had any ?pet projects? or specific areas that you've tried to push within CCP?

Trying my best to make t1 cruisers, AFs and Amarr alpha clones great again.

  • Any other thoughts?

  • How do you feel the first summit went & do you feel the dialogue with CCP was productive?

The dialogue with CCP in the first summit was focused primarily in the direction of CCP to the CSM, then the CSM back to CCP in feedback, with the focus of the majority of the meetings being on upcoming features or future plans. This helped us to refine what CCP's plans end up being, but I feel like we could have worked better to bring more topics from the playerbase to the forefront (as Noobman did in his WH session). However, given the weight of the Ascension expansion this is hardly surprising, and I was glad to be able to work with the rest of the CSM to guide it to its current state by highlighting potential issues.

  • Were there any topics that weren't extensively covered in the first summit that you hope to talk about in the next summit?

A few. I'd really like to get to talk to CCP's PvE based teams to find out how they envision it developing over the course of the next few years. I'd also like to spend some time touching on the Hisec issues that I've been working to acquaint myself with (Ganking, Wardecs, Incursion Running). The real problems however are in terms of time, for both devs & us. We could easily spend an extra week in Iceland at each summit and feel like we had more things to talk to CCP about, simply due to the huge nature of the game.

  • Has the summit changed your view on any of your fellow CSM member(s)?

Immensely so, and universally for the positive. It's incredible how quickly it became obvious that people involved in CSM XI was there to try and share their viewpoints on what was wrong or right with the direction of EvE, not to push any of their own agendas. And, on a more personal level, people who I'd had doubts about previous to it turned out to make huge contributions to the progression of the summit.

  • What change within the first half of the term would you consider the most impactful to you?

The most impactful ?change? that occurred in the first half of this term for me, personally, is something not in game at all. The fact that CCP listened to our suggestions regarding the second summit and agreed to bring all the sitting members to it again showed ? in my eyes ? how much they value the community feedback that we try and represent. I hope that this sets a precedent for the next CSM and helps prevent some of the divisions that formed within previous CSM's over perceived favouritism.

  • Have you had any ?pet projects? or specific areas that you've tried to push within CCP?

Community fittings. I absolutely love the idea, as it's such a simple (in thought terms) addition to the existing ghost fitting feature, that I really feel would help make the daunting task of understanding what ships do in the game easier, without forcing people to go outside the client.

  • Any other thoughts?

Sorry for the delay on the Quarterly Review, I was experiencing dangerous amounts of Freedom in Texas at the time I should have been writing the questions.

  • How do you feel the first summit went & do you feel the dialogue with CCP was productive?

?Pleasantly surprised? is an understatement. There was minimal friction between CSM members and CCP seemed more than happy to engage with us. I was expecting people to get tired of me asking them so many questions, but they seemed pleased to have us engaged with their development process.

  • Were there any topics that weren't extensively covered in the first summit that you hope to talk about in the next summit?

The term ?quality of life? has always been a big one for me. There are quite a few tweaks to things like the bookmark system and alliance level management I would love to see pushed through, especially in the age of Alpha clones and newbie corps.

  • Has the summit changed your view on any of your fellow CSM member(s)?

Not really, no. I started off optimistic and my expectations on my fellow CSMs has been met. They?re good dudes. Some (*cough* Jin'taan *cough*) could stand to hold their booze a little better though :)

  • What change within the first half of the term would you consider the most impactful to you?

The Ascension release, naturally. There's a whole new set of cards on the table now in terms of what we can accomplish.

  • Have you had any ?pet projects? or specific areas that you've tried to push within CCP?

Bookmarks!!!! I spent a good while talking with Team Tech Co about revamping parts of the bookmark system during the last summit.  Specifically: alliance level bookmark creation/editing, and the ability for bookmarks to optionally expire after a user-defined time duration. The latter would be a huge QoL improvement for wormholers, who live and die by the bookmarked hole. I have to say I was satisfied with the answers Tech Co gave me as well.

  • Any other thoughts?

For the love of god, vote for CSMs. Don't just refuse to vote and then complain about bloc voting ruining everything.

  • How do you feel the first summit went & do you feel the dialogue with CCP was productive?

The first summit was very positive, I am really pleased everyone approached the summit with maturity and sincerity. Everyone got on just fine and the subjects discussed had great feedback from all members of the council. Some of the CCP staff seemed a little apprehensive at times but as the summit went on even the CCP Devs that may have seemed a little wary opened up and talked openly with the council and took advice and feedback.

  • Were there any topics that weren't extensively covered in the first summit that you hope to talk about in the next summit?

Low-sec sadly got skipped, I hope we find time in january to talk on this subject. Community only had 1 hour whilst i believe it would have easily spanned 2 hours or more.

  • Has the summit changed your view on any of your fellow CSM member(s)?

Bobmon is still terrible, Jin'taan still can't drink, so no, the guys I knew from before the summit are just as i remember them. Everyone else have been a genuine pleasure to meet and work with.

  • What change within the first half of the term would you consider the most impactful to you?

I think the summit itself has been the most productive on a general level for the entire council, not just myself. Some of the council members are very active over the course of the term and will drip feed information or feedback as they have it, whilst some others are better in person. Impact on me personally has been highest when the council managed to push against a potential mistake from CCP, it showed we are being listened to and the CSM has value and makes a difference.

  • Have you had any ?pet projects? or specific areas that you've tried to push within CCP?

I am still trying hard to get some clarity on the community front and improve the level of communication for event organisers but as yet i feel my efforts are failing or falling on deaf ears. Lets call it work in progress.

  • Any other thoughts?

Bobmon is terrible, did i already say that?

  • How do you feel the first summit went & do you feel the dialogue with CCP was productive?

It went very well indeed. While there were topics where I think we could have spent more time talking to CCP, that would be the case with a 2 week summit.

  • Were there any topics that weren't extensively covered in the first summit that you hope to talk about in the next summit?

None as such. Obviously more needs to be discussed with the future of the api and structures, they were covered extensively.

  • Has the summit changed your view on any of your fellow CSM member(s)?

Nope. Just reinforced it.

  • What change within the first half of the term would you consider the most impactful to you?

ESI and the industrial structures

  • Have you had any ?pet projects? or specific areas that you've tried to push within CCP?

Other than industry and the API, no.

  • Any other thoughts?

  • How do you feel the first summit went & do you feel the dialogue with CCP was productive?

While hesitant at first, I think over all the summit was a great experience for everyone. The communication among the CSM and CCP has been very transparent over all.

  • Were there any topics that weren't extensively covered in the first summit that you hope to talk about in the next summit?

Drilling platforms, wormhole QOL changes, structure improvements.

  • Has the summit changed your view on any of your fellow CSM member(s)?

Anytime you meet people for the first time in real life vs. hearing seeing them in a virtual setting it affects your view of them. The bigger impact was seeing everyone in a dedicated EVE setting.

  • What change within the first half of the term would you consider the most impactful to you?

CCP's view of the CSM as a whole. They were quite shocked at our professionalism for the first summit. I only hope we can lead by example for future CSM's.

  • Have you had any ?pet projects? or specific areas that you've tried to push within CCP?

The Industrial command ship update was very special for me. I made a proposal in the first month of being on the CSM outlining how these ships needed a massive overhaul. I was ecstatic to see CCP took my idea, ran with it, and then improved on it with their own experience. I will not say I created the overhaul, but I am glad I made a substantial contribution which CCP felt was worthwhile to persue.

  • Any other thoughts?

Looking forward to another great summit.

  • How do you feel the first summit went & do you feel the dialogue with CCP was productive?

I was pleasantly surprised by how well the CSM as a whole worked together in person and how productive the summit was as a whole. We all have different views and ideas, yet everyone was able to express themselves in a professional manner and with respect for each other and CCP. The devs we talked to all seemed to come out of the summit with a positive experience and outlook from what I can tell. I?m looking forward to the second summit in January, but until then, the work continues.

  • Were there any topics that weren't extensively covered in the first summit that you hope to talk about in the next summit?

I was happy with what we talked about as it impacted directly what CCP was working on. We could have easily filled extra hours with every meeting we had, but we can't stay in Iceland forever! One thing I hope to get nailed down by the end of the second summit is the CSM whitepaper so that CSM XII has solid expectations on what is expected from a CSM member.

  • Has the summit changed your view on any of your fellow CSM member(s)?

Quite the opposite. Working in person with the rest of the CSM has solidified my views on my fellow members, all of them good.

  • What change within the first half of the term would you consider the most impactful to you?

I could say the engineering complexes, rorqual changes or any number of 'small things? but for me, the public perception of the CSM and the repairing of the working relationship between the CSM as a representative body and certain CCP devs that have been burnt by previous CSM's is definitely the most fulfilling work we've done. For the CSM to work there needs to be a mutual trust and respect. This is the foundation we, as CSM XI, have worked very hard to rebuild with both CCP and the community as a whole. I've become very protective of our work, which is one reason I, among with a good portion of this terms CSM, have decided to run again next year.

  • Have you had any ?pet projects? or specific areas that you've tried to push within CCP?

That's not the function of the CSM, so no. I have however brought up every valid concern, bug or opinion relating to in-development features and possible new features with the appropriate teams. I originally ran on being a voice for the community (which is the function of the CSM) and I'd like to think I?m doing a good job.

  • Any other thoughts?

Before the next summit we will be running another round of information gathering initiatives (roundtable, town hall, forum posts, AMA etc). I ask that the community assist us in being well prepared for anything we might encounter and to make your voices known to us so we can recommend appropriately for the sake of CCP and the players.

  • How do you feel the first summit went & do you feel the dialogue with CCP was productive?

CCP was oddly receptive and willing to work with the CSM, the first summit was very productive. The only real complaint I had about the first summit was the hotel rooms not being ready. I enjoyed a great deal of food and an equal amount of sophisticated discussions about the future of eve with many a CCP dev.

  • Were there any topics that weren't extensively covered in the first summit that you hope to talk about in the next summit?

Even the topics we did cover could have been talked about more. There are some discussions that simply aren't going to be finished properly in the time frame allotted. There is only so much time in a day and the allocated days we are at CCP HQ; to cover topics. Brevity seems to be a virtue.

  • Has the summit changed your view on any of your fellow CSM member(s)?

No, all members of the CSM behaved within expected parameters.

  • What change within the first half of the term would you consider the most impactful to you?

The NPE is core to why I ran for the CSM this time around. Without a functional NPE eve will wither and die. The changes made to the NPE and the clone states system overall were a positive one.

  • Have you had any ?pet projects? or specific areas that you've tried to push within CCP?

I have been trying to get CCP to put pink skins into eve for 3 years and it seems I have finally been successful. I try to refocus many of the proposed changes and planned implementations CCP has for eve in a more social light. I feel strongly that eve as a game is about the players themselves. I have tried to shine light onto what I see as a proper hierarchy of importance. Mechanics are important but the psychology and social perceptions of the end user should always take priority; mechanics should adhere to and follow that. To their credit members of CCP are highly intelligent and versed in the topics which I bring forth well beyond the level of your average lay person. I find myself not needing to re-explain or simplify my words and this is a source of profound tranquility for me.

  • Any other thoughts?

I ate much of the liquid yogurt and beverages at CCP, it would be nice if they also had tins of fish or fish based products like fish jerky which could be snaked on. I don't think everybody at CCP knew we were going to be there. Some of the CCP devs were shocked or confused when I encountered them around the office on my way to get more food. A few of them stared at me and seemed concerned or panicked by my presence. A company wide email to alert everybody to the fact that the CSM would be in the office would do wonders to alleviate this.

  • How do you feel the first summit went & do you feel the dialogue with CCP was productive?

The summit was an enjoyable experience and very productive, especially in light of all the work that needed to be done prior to Ascension being deployed. I felt that many if not most of our suggestions and concerns related to Alpha clones and the rest of the expansion were taken to heart and promptly addressed by CCP. The relationship between CCP and the CSM in this sense is finally ?working as intended? again, which is one of the biggest goals CSM XI had going into this term. I think that the healthy relationship with CCP and the productivity of this group as compared to recent CSMs is a direct result of the great personalities of this year's councilmembers, and the general willingness to put personal/political interests aside in the pursuit of a better game for all.

  • Were there any topics that weren't extensively covered in the first summit that you hope to talk about in the next summit?

Balance was not covered anywhere near as extensively as I would have liked, but it was understandable given how much time had to be dedicated to Clones States and the Ascension expansion. Working on balance and mechanics was my primary interest in running for CSM and I hope that with Ascension successfully deployed, we can dedicate some serious time to balance topics and how best to go about defeating the Frigate Menace. Low-Sec and FW were also absent from the schedule, which was another understandable, yet disappointing gap in our schedule. Lastly the specific topic of Hi-Sec wardecs seems to be another years long due discussion that needs to happen in person at the next summit, despite active discussion in our other communication venues. Although I personally despise hisec ?pvp? and think these nerds should get good and come to lowsec where the real men live, I can't neglect the fact that this topic affects a very large number of people and has been in sore need of an update for years.

  • Has the summit changed your view on any of your fellow CSM member(s)?

It was great meeting everyone in person and felt that CCP's decision to have all members present went a long way to the success and productivity of this CSM and the first Summit. It was interesting to see and get to know members and devs IRL over our previous interactions in game and over other comms. Some members that have drawn particular ire from the community for one reason or another really turned out to be great guys, as I expected having interacted with them more closely than the generally community. Xenuria's input during the NPE session was very valuable; Aryth's number crunching wizardry was extremely useful during the Market/Industry session; Sullen turned out to be the CSM member that I most clicked with in terms of personality and attitude; Bobmon, Jin, and Kyle have all been identified as members of the frigate menace and will be purged for their crimes.

  • What change within the first half of the term would you consider the most impactful to you?

The T3D and Warfare Links changes were important balance decisions that have made a positive impact on the health of the game. The small adjustments to fighter application and HAW CPU usage were also an important ?flash? decisions that I was able to provide input on so far this term.

  • Have you had any ?pet projects? or specific areas that you've tried to push within CCP?

I have worked on a vast array of balance and mechanics proposals that hopefully will be discussed and addressed at the next summit; these cover a wide range of standing community concerns as well as my own. The general topic of balance update frequency is one high level policy I would like to see improved on. Improving the state of Battleships and large ships in general to encourage their use and see them return in numbers to the meta is an ongoing crusade of mine. The corruption of the Frigate Menace is strong, even in the community at large, and I will continue working with the Battleship Inquisition to root out all heresy so Battleships can roam wild and free once more, like the buffalo.

  • Any other thoughts?

Thanks to CCP Guard and Logibro for their great work this term coordinating the CSM and Summits.
On another note, I am still concerned with a certain vocal minority of the community that seems dead set in wanting to see the CSM fail. Thanks to the efforts of Jin and other more publicly interfacing members of our group, this CSM has provided numerous venues and platforms for feedback, as well as regular updates (within the limits of the NDA) as to what is going on. However, the selective outrage and willful ignorance of some members of the community towards the CSM as an institution as well as individual members is wholly counterproductive and uncalled for. Topics like meeting attendance are taken completely out of context and judged as some kind of benchmark for participation, without consideration to how things like TZ scheduling and RL jobs affect a member's ability to attend. The vast majority of the work the CSM does takes place on our own time and through platforms like HipChat and Confluence where we continually discuss topics and proposals with CCP. I understand the NDA and the nature of the development cycle are barriers that will always cause an i
